Land Conservation

Galleries Commit has partnered with Art to Acres to permanently conserve 200,000 acres of ecologically vital and vulnerable land by creating the Chuyapi-Urusayuha regional conservation area in Peru.  

 

This is the first large-scale, gallery worker-led, collective land conservation project, demonstrating the potential to make a significant and meaningful impact when galleries, gallery workers, and our allies unite for a climate-conscious future.   

 

The old-growth cloud forest is being conserved as a national protected area at the direct request of the local communities. This will protect wildlife and ecosystems in a last chance mammal area as well as forests that currently store 30,531,002 tonnes of carbon (tCO2). At current deforestation rates, about 13,920 tonnes of this carbon would be released into the atmosphere each year if unprotected.

  • Total stored carbon in the location: 30,531,002 tCO2

  • Threat coefficient (rate of unprotected deforestation): 0.33%  annually

  • Avoided release annually for 198,752 acres: 13,920 tCO2

  • Conservation support cost per acre: $0.34

  • Cost of avoided release per tCO2: $4.92* 

 

*This is itemized for one year. In protecting the land, the avoided carbon release actually recurs annually. If calculated over 100 years, this becomes $.0492 per tCO2.
